If you can set aside your discomfort around the idea of being naked with others, it’s a freeing experience. In Japan, removing the clothes and taking baths together is seen as something of an equalizer. When you lay things bare, there’s a sense of relaxation. A reminder that deep down we’re all a pretty similar pile of skin and bones.

What makes the sand unique is that its heated by the steam of hot spring water that flows beneath it. The weight of the mineral-rich sand on the body is believed to increase the volume of blood pumped out of the heart, improving circulation and stimulating waste secretion. While perhaps not the treatment for anyone whose claustrophobic, the sensation feels similar to lying under a warm, weighted blanket. In Japan, sentos (public bath houses) are typically separated by gender, with women bathing on one side and men on the other. There are also mixed-gender sentos, but these are less common. While bathing in a sento is usually a social activity, some people may prefer to use them for hygiene reasons.
The Story of “Sentō”: A History of Public Bathhouses in Japan
Sento, or public bathhouses, were once a staple of Japanese neighborhood life. These bastions of communal bathing allow customers to pay a small fee to shower and then soak in a variety of tubs. Super sento offers spa baths, onsens, and many different kinds of bathtubs, as well as saunas. Super sento prices vary from branch to branch and range from 500 to 2,500 yen. Examples of super sentos include Spa LaQua next to Tokyo Dome, and Spa World in Osaka. However, enhanced versions of bathhouses, known as “super sentō,” have been growing in popularity.
Public bathhouses can be found in most neighborhoods in Japan. My first Japanese bath experience at Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu near Tokyo was the most boutique bathhouse I visited. There were seven different pools, including a carbonated bath, cypress bath, themed bath with flower petals, and normal baths of differing temperatures — plus great views of the nearby mountains. At ￥1,000 ($8.76) during low season and ￥1,200 ($10.51) during high season, it was a steal for the quality.

As a preventive measure against prostitution, the Tokugawa shogunate stipulated that no more than three yuna serve at any given bathhouse. However, this rule was widely ignored, causing the shogunate to ban female attendants from bathhouses altogether and once again prohibit the practice of mixed-sex bathing.

Daikokuten-no-yu has striking mosaic tile paintings of golden pine trees in a space where bathers can submerge in an artificial radon hot spring and jacuzzi.

Note that I have photos of myself in the sento in this post, but I was in the sento before opening hours and had special permission from the owners to take photos for the purpose of this article. It’s important to note the difference so you don’t arrive at a sento expecting a natural geothermal hot spring from the earth. But for most onsen and sento, the whole point of the experience is to be in the nude.
Go to the bathroom beforehand; most changing rooms do not have a toilet. Remove all clothing and accessories in the changing area and put them in one of the baskets or lockers. Tattoos are not common in Japan, and it was once thought that if you had a tattoo, you were a member of the notorious Yakuza. Therefore, sentos and onsens banned tattoos from the bathhouse. Almost all sentos will have a hairdryer in the changing rooms, and some may have extra items like Q-tips and hair spray. Inside the actual bathhouse, you can expect to find body wash and shampoo, and many that I visited even have conditioner. So if you find yourself in an outdoor bath, you are most likely at an onsen.
Normal conversation is perfectly fine while bathing, but be considerate of others and do not make too much noise. Photography is not allowed at most onsen; check with the staff beforehand. Watch your step while walking; the floor can tend to get slippery due to the onsen water’s minerals. If you are staying at a ryokan, rest for about 30 minutes in your room before making your way to the onsen.
Many baths have saunas, rest areas, massage chairs and a vending machine for snacks and drinks. Some even offer massage services, restaurants and overnight accommodation. One budget way to stay overnight in Japan is to sleep in a reclining chair or tatami rest room at bathhouse that is open all night. If there are multiple baths, feel free to move from one bath to another. Once done bathing, dry off with your small towel before entering the changing room.
